A nine-amino acid neuropeptide hormone produced in the hypothalamus. Studies have investigated its roles in social bonding, stress modulation, tissue repair signaling, and metabolic regulation.
Oxytocin is a cyclic nonapeptide synthesized in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. It acts through the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), a G-protein coupled receptor expressed in the brain, uterus, mammary tissue, heart, bone, and immune cells. In the central nervous system, oxytocin modulates social behavior, anxiety, stress responses, and pain perception. Peripherally, it stimulates uterine contractions and lactation, but also promotes tissue repair signaling by promoting cell migration and proliferation, modulates inflammatory responses, and has been shown to affect cardiomyocyte differentiation and bone formation in research models.
