Quality Matters: How to Evaluate a Peptide Supplier
In peptide research, your results are only as good as your materials. A compound with unknown purity, degraded potency, or incorrect composition can waste months of work and lead to irreproducible findings. Choosing the right supplier isn't just about price — it's about protecting the integrity of your research.
The Five Pillars of Supplier Quality
1. Purity Verification
Look for suppliers who provide third-party testing documentation. RP-HPLC with UV detection should show purity of 98% or higher for most research peptides, and the same analysis should confirm identity — that what is in the vial is the compound named on the label, not a similar but different one. Ask which laboratory ran it, and whether the report names the batch you are being sold.
2. Certificate of Analysis (COA)
A legitimate supplier provides COAs for every batch. A useful certificate reports four things — identity, quantity, purity and heavy metals — along with the laboratory, the method and the date of analysis. Be wary of suppliers who cannot or will not provide batch-specific COAs on request, and of a certificate that names no batch.
3. Proper Storage and Handling
Peptides are sensitive molecules. They can degrade with heat, moisture, and light exposure. Quality suppliers store lyophilized peptides under appropriate conditions (typically 2-8°C or frozen) and ship with cold packs when necessary. Ask about a supplier's storage and shipping protocols.
4. Transparent Sourcing
Where are the peptides synthesized? What quality management systems are in place? Reputable suppliers are transparent about their supply chain and manufacturing standards. Look for GMP or GMP-adjacent manufacturing when possible.
5. Customer Support and Expertise
A quality supplier employs people who understand the science. Can they answer technical questions about their products? Do they provide handling and storage guidance? The best supplier relationships feel like partnerships, not transactions.
Red Flags to Watch For
- No COAs available or only generic (non-batch-specific) documentation
- Prices dramatically below market rates (if it seems too good to be true...)
- Making therapeutic or medical claims about research compounds
- No clear contact information or customer service
- Packaging that doesn't include proper labeling and lot numbers
